Diaper Drives: A Personal Journey with Baby’s Bounty
Diaper drives hold a special place in my heart, particularly as a mother who had to start over. Baby’s Bounty, an organization I volunteered for while pursuing my second degree at UNLV, provided a lifeline during various stages of my life. Every time I moved throughout the city of Las Vegas, I knew where to find donated boxes. I will never forget my experience volunteering there.
When I first started volunteering, I wasn’t yet a mother and had no plans of becoming one. Anything baby or child-related was new to me. I learned so much about babies from Baby’s Bounty. I made outfits from donated clothing, pairing items together—a skill that probably explains why Elizabeth is so stylish today. They taught me about essential toiletries, including lotion, diaper rash ointments, pacifiers, body wash, and more. I learned about different baby products—the best, the cheapest, and the most popular.
I also learned how to conduct inventory for donations. I worked behind the scenes, breaking down boxes and sorting clothes by size. I learned how to organize a baby’s room and create a safe environment.
The most important thing I learned was baby sleep safety. I used to fear that Liz would accidentally suffocate in her sleep. Implementing everything I learned from Baby’s Bounty’s sleep training classes for new moms alleviated that fear.
During my time volunteering, the founder was in the process of retiring. I chose Baby’s Bounty for my volunteer hours required for my communication degree because, as a former foster youth, I wanted to support low-income families. Part of my requirement was to write a paper about my experience, and I decided to interview the director and creator of Baby’s Bounty. Reflecting now, the seeds for my own nonprofit, Parents Coming Together, were planted during that interview. The director identified a need she could fill, starting Baby’s Bounty out of her garage until she expanded with grants and support from across Nevada.
During my rebirth as a mother, I relied on Baby’s Bounty for diapers and wipes through their monthly diaper drives. This was crucial for me, especially since Liz had bowel movement issues. I went through wipes and diapers in abundance, determined to prevent diaper rashes.
Thank you, Baby’s Bounty, for providing me with the insight I never knew I needed until I became a mom. Thanks for supplying me and other parents with diapers and wipes, relieving us of a major expense.
I will always pay homage to your organization!
