My name is Tiara Christopher, and I stand before you today not as a victim, but as a testament to the incredible resilience and strength that lies within each of us. I want to share a piece of my journey with you, a story that I hope will inspire you to see the potential within yourselves, no matter what challenges you face.
On September 3, 2022, my life took an unexpected turn. An argument with my partner escalated to the point where he said something that shattered me: “That’s why your own mother doesn’t love you.” Overcome with emotion, I lashed out. In the heat of the moment, I hit him. The police were called, and in my desperate attempt to protect myself and my nine-month-old daughter, I drove away. I was soon surrounded by four police cars. Despite proving my innocence, I was arrested for assault, domestic violence in the presence of a child, and possession of marijuana and paraphernalia.
In that predominantly white small town, I faced intense racism and hostility while incarcerated. I spent three agonizing days in jail, consumed with worry for my breastfed baby. When I was released, I found that my partner had placed a restraining order on me, emptied our bank account, and canceled our lease. I was left homeless with just $1.13 to my name. I lost so much weight during that time, and I was forced to live out of my car, often panhandling for food. Despite these hardships, I never lost faith. I turned my pain into purpose, finding strength in God and the support of family members.
For five months, I lived in my car, occasionally staying in Airbnb rentals. I faced cold winters and humiliating circumstances, but I never gave up. I fought for custody of my daughter, and although the judicial system failed me in many ways, I persevered. I became a certified yoga instructor, a trauma specialist, and earned a third degree in a new field: psychology. I refused to let my circumstances define me.
You see, my story is not just about survival; it’s about transformation. I learned that even in our darkest moments, there is a way to reclaim our power and voice. Writing became my therapy, and education became my salvation. I want to share some key lessons I’ve learned with you:
1. Strength and Resilience: You are stronger than you know. Life will test you, but with faith and determination, you can overcome anything.
2. Self-Sufficiency: You don’t need anyone to define your worth. God is your strength, and you are capable of achieving great things on your own.
3. Positive Thinking: Your mindset is powerful. Speak positively over your life and watch as your circumstances begin to change.
4. Support Systems: Don’t be afraid to reach out for help. Isolation can be a place of transformation, but community and support are essential for growth.
5. Spiritual Awakening: Trust that God has a plan for you. Your struggles have a purpose, and your journey can inspire others.
Remember, having a criminal record does not define your future. You are more than your mistakes, and your past does not dictate your potential. I stand here as proof that you can turn your life around, that you can achieve your dreams and become a beacon of hope for others.
Each of you has the power to make a positive impact in your community. Embrace your journey, learn from your experiences, and let God guide you towards a future filled with promise and purpose. Your story is still being written, and the best chapters are yet to come.
Thank you for allowing me to share my story. May it inspire you to rise above your circumstances and realize your full potential. God bless you all.
