Lost in Modern Society: A Raw Take on Awareness, Authority, and Authentic Change

What would you change about modern society?

“Perhaps when we find ourselves wanting everything, it is because we are dangerously close to wanting nothing.” — Sylvia Plath

Sylvia Plath’s quote, “Perhaps when we find ourselves wanting everything, it is because we are dangerously close to wanting nothing,” resonates deeply with me. She is highlighting a paradox of desire and fulfillment in modern society. When we constantly crave everything, it may signal a profound emptiness or lack of true fulfillment within us. This insatiable wanting can indicate that we don’t truly know what we want or need, leading to a void that no amount of external gratification can fill. In our pursuit of everything, we might be masking a deeper dissatisfaction, illustrating the importance of self-awareness and genuine purpose in our lives.

Welcome to my world of resilience, empowerment, and authenticity. As a proud single mom, entrepreneur, and advocate, I share my journey not just to inspire but to ignite the strength within you. My writing reflects my lived experiences—from overcoming homelessness to embracing motherhood with unwavering love. Here, raw truth meets heartfelt wisdom, and together, we’ll explore the path of healing and growth.

Start with some of my breakout pieces that have deeply resonated with readers:

1. “Dollhouse” - A look into how families that seem perfect to outsiders can be deeply troubled behind closed doors.

2. “The Boy Disguised as a Man” - A personal account of being trapped by an older man with a baby, challenging the belief that only women trap men.

3. “The Heart He Left Behind” - A narrative on love, loss, and finding resilience in the aftermath.

4. “Sarah Jakes Rivers, Strip Clubs, and Subpoenas” - How every strip club in Vegas was subpoenaed, and the guidance of Sarah Jakes Roberts helped me navigate through it.

Back to the prompt. People lack awareness. They walk around looking down at the ground, walking while texting, completely unaware of their surroundings. I hate when people stand in the middle of a pathway at an airport or school campus, blocking others who are trying to get to their destinations.

There’s a lack of quality customer service. Consumers are not always right, but they embody the revenue. Yet, places like Starbucks make certain genders and ethnic groups feel uncomfortable for having the same meetings other cultures would have. When I was pregnant, I used to meet weekly with my therapist at a local Starbucks in Las Vegas. The employees would stare every week, wondering about our dynamic, but I never saw them stare at other groups. Customer care and respect are lacking in today’s society.

People who’ve never had real power, like the monitors at self-checkout grocery stores, implement what little authority they have. I noticed this especially during COVID-19. I called them the mask police. Staff were quick to tell you to wear your mask, not out of health concern, but because they finally had some authority. I am highly educated and can read people like a book. I have keen observation, attention to detail, and a vast interest in human behavior. These staff members were quick to bark orders about pulling up masks but couldn’t even bark orders at their puppy at home.

This modern society is lost, often focused on the wrong things. People are worried about trivial issues like social media trends instead of ensuring we have the best possible president out of two horrendous choices.

In general, people are more concerned with the trivial than with what’s truly important for evolving as a society and creating a better world for the children we mothers literally birthed or had surgically delivered just to raise them in an ultimately lost world.

Before we change the world, we have to change ourselves.
