Embracing Wellness: Integrating Yoga, Faith, and Self-Affirmation for Holistic Health and Resilience

What strategies do you use to maintain your health and well-being?

Maintaining health and well-being involves a multi-faceted approach, and for me, yoga plays a pivotal role. As a wellness specialist and certified expert in various alternative healing practices, I integrate these methods into my routine. My approach to yoga, particularly as a certified trauma specialist, begins with journaling. In both one-on-one and group classes, we dedicate the first 20 minutes to journaling. This practice helps process our thoughts and emotions, and we follow this with a period of reflection in corpse pose, where we stay grounded and set intentions for the class.

Following journaling, we transition into the physical practice of yoga. This phase is designed to address and heal various physical and emotional challenges my clients, students, or patients may be experiencing. We then move to circle time, where participants share their inner thoughts, emotions, and feelings in a safe, inclusive environment characterized by love, peace, and transparency. In one-on-one sessions, instead of circle time, I conduct yoga therapy. This therapy promotes emotional release, enhances self-awareness, and facilitates healing by addressing trauma from a psychological perspective.

Beyond yoga, I maintain a healthy mindset through various practices. I regularly read positive literature, including “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz. This book explores how our beliefs are shaped by societal and parental influences and challenges us to adopt agreements that foster personal growth and freedom. The four agreements are:

1. Be impeccable with your word.

2. Don’t take anything personally.

3. Don’t make assumptions.

4. Always do your best.

Each agreement sets the stage for personal transformation and emotional resilience.

Another significant book in my life is “The Power of Positive Thinking” by Norman Vincent Peale. As a woman of faith, I find this book deeply rooted in spiritual principles. It emphasizes maintaining a positive mindset through reliance on God rather than solely on oneself. I discovered this book during pregnancy, and it has become one of my top five favorites, offering practical solutions and insights grounded in faith.

As a motivational speaker, I also turn to positive speeches and interviews by figures such as Les Brown, Steve Harvey, and Pastor Sarah Jakes Roberts. Additionally, I find inspiration in the works of Dr. Maya Angelou, whose insights I discuss in my blog, “Why Dr. Maya Angelou is My Favorite Historical Figure,” and Eartha Kitt.

I was drawn to Eartha Kitt by her powerful quote: “I want to fall in love with me, and I want you to fall in love with me. I want someone who loves me because of the way I love myself.” This quote speaks to the essence of self-worth and self-love, emphasizing the importance of cultivating genuine love for oneself before seeking validation from others. Eartha Kitt’s legacy of resilience and advocacy aligns with my own commitment to using my voice and experiences to challenge societal norms and inspire change.

Kitt’s career as a singer, actress, dancer, and civil rights activist reflects a profound dedication to breaking barriers and advocating for social justice. Like Kitt, I strive to use my platform to challenge societal norms and inspire change, drawing strength from her legacy.

In addition to these practices, I maintain a healthy mindset through daily prayer and church attendance. Faith provides me with a sense of purpose and reassurance that God has a plan for my life. I recently let go of my vision board, realizing that it was obstructing the vision God has for me. Embracing the scripture, “Though He slay me, yet shall I trust in Him,” helps me navigate my darkest days with faith. Even when I struggle with fear and anxiety, I return to God, trusting in His support and guidance. This surrender to His vision brings comfort and aligns my path with His purpose for me.

Lastly, I listen to affirmations, particularly those by Alanna on YouTube. Her “I AM,” “Gratitude,” and “Self-Confidence” affirmation videos remind me of the importance of self-affirmation and positive reinforcement in maintaining a balanced and healthy mindset.

Welcome to my world of resilience, empowerment, and authenticity. As a proud single mom, entrepreneur, and advocate, I share my journey not just to inspire but to ignite the strength within you. My writing reflects my lived experiences—from overcoming homelessness to embracing motherhood with unwavering love. Here, raw truth meets heartfelt wisdom, and together, we’ll explore the path of healing and growth.

Start with some of my breakout pieces that have deeply resonated with readers:

1. “Dollhouse” – A look into how families that seem perfect to outsiders can be deeply troubled behind closed doors.

2. “The Boy Disguised as a Man” – A personal account of being trapped by an older man with a baby, challenging the belief that only women trap men.

3. “The Heart He Left Behind” – A narrative on love, loss, and finding resilience in the aftermath.

4. “Sarah Jakes Rivers, Strip Clubs, and Subpoenas” – How every strip club in Vegas was subpoenaed, and the guidance of Sarah Jakes Roberts helped me navigate through it.
